HOW TO LEARN TO PLAY PIANO

To make music, instead of just playing notes in random order, you need a kind of map that shows you which note is to be played when and for how long. Reading music sheets is similar to reading a hiking map. The hiking map shows the destination, the route you need to take, where you can rest, and for how long, in order to reach your destination in time. In the music, the sequence of notes provides the route; the bars and beats tell you where in time the notes are to be played.

As you already know, the time signature determines how many beats of a certain note value fit in a bar. Now you are ready to learn about the tempo, in other words how fast or how slow you should play. Listen to the audio sample.

Do you know what you just did? You just learned to read notes and translate them into music. So far, you have only tapped the notes on your thighs, but soon you will play your first pieces on the piano!

If you are unsure where to place your fingers, the following tool will help you to learn the piano. The following button will jump to the picture showing where middle C is. Use this as a point of orientation.

The ability to read and play notes at the same time is essential if you want to play directly from sheet music. You should also build up your sense of rhythm, so it is important that you play the notes at the same time as in the sample. Repeat the exercise as long as you need to be in sync with the melody.

Congratulations! In the last lesson you started reading and playing music at the same time, and now you have already played your first duet. A duet is where two people (in this case you and the computer) play a piece together.

So, you will play the first bar with your left hand, the second with your right, and the third and fourth bars with both hands together. To get an idea of what the song sounds like, listen to the audio sample:

Exercise: While listening to the piece, play along with the rhythm and follow the notes carefully. Repeat the exercise three times. Next, try saying the words as well, and repeat the exercise three more times.

There are many difficult piano pieces. We present five pieces that are so demanding that they were considered unplayable at times. Even today, they still demand skills from pianists that cannot be acquired through practice alone.

With 88 keys to memorize and about 45,000 pounds of tension to deal with, playing the piano is no doubt both physical and mental work. All that hard work is worth it though, once the pianist hits those notes and produces beautiful sounds.

Keyboards generally cost less than pianos do. On the plus side, keyboards never go out of tune and take up much less space than a piano will. Wherein, acoustic pianos typically range in price from $2,000 to $10,000 or more for some high-quality concert grand pianos.

Learn about the keys and their names. If your piano came with a book or you chose to buy one, the keys should be in the piano book. If not, this 5-minute tutorial will walk you through an easy way to learn the keys.

When you press the black key right above and beside the Middle C note, it produces either a C sharp (C#) or a D flat (Db). The black key beside it plays the D# or Eb. As for the black key beside Middle F, it plays F# or Gb.

Last, consider taking piano lessons with a piano instructor. An instructor will give you hands-on coaching, accountability for learning the instrument, and teach you how to correct pacing. Plus, if you teach yourself the basics, a piano teacher will help expedite the process to you playing some simple songs you really want to learn!

Mastering the piano takes even talented musicians many years of study, but you can learn the basics of playing this instrument in a relatively short period of time. Once you have these under your belt, you'll have to practice for these habits and techniques for them to become second nature. With a little time and effort, before you know it, you'll be playing with proper posture, hand position, and you'll be reading music, too.

You can learn to play your guitar or keyboard by taking the guitar or piano lessons included with GarageBand. You can download additional lessons, including Artist Lessons with songs taught by the artists themselves. You choose and open lessons from the Project Chooser.

When you open a lesson, video instruction and an animated fretboard (for guitar lessons) or keyboard (for piano lessons) appear in the upper and lower parts of the lesson window. While the lesson is playing, chords, notes and other notation appear in the centre of the window. At the bottom of the window is a control bar with playback, volume and other controls.

Each lesson is organised in sections, based on the material being covered. The sections appear in a row at the bottom of the window, above the control bar. You can select a section to play, and practise a section repeatedly until you master it.

You can customise the appearance of the video, notation and instrument to suit the way you want to learn. You can also slow down the speed of the lesson, change the mix of a lesson and have GarageBand show you how you played.

There are too many improv options to list in this overview, but a few of my favorites include chord patterns, arpeggios, and octave switching. I promise that learning how to improvise on piano is not as hard as it sounds. You just need some clear instructions and a reasonable amount of practice time.

Why do melody and playing by ear go hand in hand? Well, training yourself to hear changes in the music precisely is a good way to develop melodies without sheet music. When you can pick out melodies without needing to sight-read, you can spend a lot less time worrying about individual notes or mimicking the original song like a robot. Learning how to play piano by ear allows for more personality in your playing.

That said, I understand that not everyone is the same. People have different goals and different learning styles. Some have fairly straightforward needs, while others prefer a lot of flexibility. I hear from everyone from stay-at-home parents, to world travelers, to CEO and retirees. So I get it, and I understand that the best way to learn piano for one person might not be the best choice for someone else.

When considering how to teach yourself piano from online resources, self-guided learning is budget-friendly and offers flexibility for any schedule. That said, there are some downsides to this method:

Take on the piano, give it your best shot, and know that in doing so you are not only bringing yourself joy but also medicinally benefiting your brain and hands (especially finger joint health).

You can learn how to read music just like you can learn how to order in French. There are tutorials, apps, and a plethora of recourses online where you can get yourself up-to-speed on music-reading basics. You will need to familiarize yourself with treble and bass clefs, and the seven-note scale, which is the basis of all western music. It is helpful to also take a peek at music theory, as understanding a little bit about how music functions will improve your performance, memorization, and ability to recover from accidental mistakes.

Many prestigious conservatories offer continued education in a form of a music school where non-professional musicians can improve their skills and learn everything from theory and composition to choral conducting. These courses are often overlapping with college and graduate school divisions and are taught by top specialists in the field. (see: The Juilliard Evening Division, Mannes at New School to name a couple)

I agree that young people have more flexibility and are more energetic than adults but these days there are many success stories of adults learning piano even at the age of above 60 and above. So, I would say nothing is impossible. If you are serious and have passion, you will learn. Also, there are many adult beginner-friendly piano resources available these days. Stay focused and consistent. Good luck!
